Great Gemstones For Guys

The funny thing about buying guy’s jewelry, is that women don’t know what gemstones or colors a guy would wear.

What’s even funnier, is that guys don’t know what’s appropriate either.

With everybody scratching their heads on all the available gemstones on the face of the earth, I thought I’d help you out.

Here are the top 18 gemstones and their colors that will look good on just about any man and any ring. I hereby give you:

Guy’s gemstones:

There are actually way more than just 18 stones, these are just the more popular ones I’m highlighting

1) Sapphire

(See picture: #1) Blue sapphire is hands down the number one gemstone for guys, period. No doubts about this. It’s the toughest gemstone to buy other than a diamond. It will hold up well and last a lifetime. The dark blue tones are very masculine and it is a great color to wear everyday. Caution: Don’t buy sapphires that are so dark they look black! Those lifeless sapphires are cheap and low quality. Avoid them. Instead get a sapphire with a nice intense shade of blue. A blue that is blue is the best and preferred stone. For durability and looks, sapphire wins by a mile.

2) Black Onyx

(See picture: #2) Black onyx is one of the most popular gemstones for a man. The deep polished black gemstone looks awesome with yellow gold. It creates a stunning contrast that men love. The sad thing about onyx is that it’s rather brittle. It chips easily and guys are always knocking them out of the mountings. They can be replaced with new onyx, but normally it has to be sent out for a new one to be custom fitted into the ring. It’s not that expensive, but it takes time to do. But if you like the bold look, then black and gold can’t be beat. Just watch where you beat it.

3) Malachite

I love this gemstone. Malachite is a green rock that looks like polished marble. Malachite is a very manly stone with black streaks, dark lines, spots and vivid green hues. Very stylish, very unique and always a crowd pleaser.

4) Lapis

Another great look with polished blue hues and great soothing tones. Deep blues with black spots, Crisp lines and sharp designs. Lapis is surely an eye-catcher.

5) Tiger’s Eye

(See picture: #5) Tiger’s eye is one of the best looks out there for any man. I think all men should have a tiger’s eye ring. It looks just like a reptile pupil with great dark brown tones and golden stripes, tiger’s eye is like an iris that catches light. It’s clean, rugged and sexy. Great stone, great look. They look awesome in yellow gold.

6) Cats Eye

(See picture: #6) Cat’s eye is just like the tiger’s eye, but in wonderful gray tones. Deep shades of grayscale that roll back and forth across the dome. The way these type of stones play with the light and catch your eyes is amazing. It almost gives the impression that the gemstone is looking at you. Very cool.

7) Star Sapphires

(See picture: #7) These star producing gemstones come in great colors of blue (as shown), black, gray, and red. The star is formed by the stones rutile needles and how they react with the light. The stronger the star, the better the stone. These gemstones are always cabochon cut (domed) and very high polished.

8) Garnet

The birthstone for January is a great stone for any man. Garnet has intense orange-red-rust colors that appeal to all with a rich, earthy hue. Most people say that it looks like fine wine. Garnet also comes in a variety of colors, but the deep reds are the favorite. Garnet is durable, inexpensive and masculine!

9) Ruby

Ruby has always been a beautiful stone that’s durable, rich, and has been honored by kings and royalty of all kinds. Not to mention the fact that ruby makes up the eyes of just about every lion’s head ring. Being a precious gemstone and the birthstone for July, ruby is not cheap. Especially finding gemstones with a deep dark red body tone. Most rubies that you find on the market are pale and pink. That’s why most are now created and not genuine. If you can, I would advise to always buy the real stone.

10) Emerald

Another of the precious stones that has stunning deep green hues. Emerald is earthy and masculine, not to mention expensive, rare and the birthstone for May. Emerald is also a softer gemstone and men have a habit of smashing it into bits. You have to be careful with emeralds. It only takes a good strike to break it in half. If you’re the rough and rugged type, pass on this stone. If you want to wear the color green, turn to green tourmaline (it’s coming up on the list).

11) Citrine

Citrines have beautiful yellow-orange hues like golden sunsets. The birthstone for November may be bright and colorful, but it still manages to keep a masculine appeal because of it’s deep amber earth tones. Being good gemstones to wear, they never seem to disappoint. Citrines hold up well under wear and tear and look great in yellow gold.

12) Green Tourmaline

Tourmalines are wonderful gemstones that have deep rich greens that just reek of manliness.

Tourmaline is the official birthstone for October, but most people associate the October birthstone with pink color (Pink tourmaline is what everybody thinks of). Most don’t even know that you can get tourmalines in different colors. I advise green tourmaline as a great alternative to pink (Most guys wouldn’t be caught dead wearing pink). Deep forest greens are full of zest and charisma. You’ll just love the outdoor hues.

13) Black Opal

(See picture: #13 – It actually looks blue!) Black opal is an awesome look for a man’s ring. Black opal is not only beautiful and full of life and colors and drama, but it comes in all sorts of blacks, greens, oranges and blues. Deep tones, vibrant colors, a kaleidoscope of ever changing light. The only sad thing is, opals are very fragile and can shatter easy. You have to be careful wearing this stone. Watch where you smack that thing.

14) Cameo

Cameos are great stones that have been around forever. Generations of men have worn cameos and passed them down throughout the years. Way back in the times, cameos were used in class rings. Cameos are flat stones with raised carvings on them. These carvings are normally of people, designs or beautiful scenes. It’s no wonder why cameos have stood the test of time. Cameos not only make a stunning statement, but awesome jewelry as well.

15) Agate

Agate is a rock from the family of gemstones known as chalcedony. Agates have a rich marbled look with parallel growth bands that are polished to perfection. Agates come in an assortment of colors, shapes, shades and designs and has been mined since the 14th century. You’ll never tire of looking at agates, they are always different and always striking.

16) Diamonds

Yes, diamonds are considered a gemstone. Who could forget diamond?

Diamond is the most popular stone for men to wear because not only is it the official stone for the wedding band, but diamonds also compliment all other men’s rings. Rings with sapphire and onyx and citrine normally have diamonds in them as well (See picture for examples).

Small diamonds in the mountings will add beauty and sparkle to any gemstone, and any ring or jewelry. The only reason I stick them down on the bottom of the list is because most men will only wear diamonds in small quantities. It’s rare to find a man wearing a ring with a large diamond in the center. Usually it’s the woman that will show off the large diamond masterpieces.

17) Black Diamond

Following right on the heels of white diamonds, we have black diamonds. Black diamonds are diamonds that are black and are becoming more popular as we speak. They are great stones for men’s rings because they give you that awesome black and gold look, and are very durable. In fact, diamond is the most durable gemstone on the face of the earth. Black diamonds are easy to set, easy to clean and look stunning in yellow gold. Check out the local jewelry stores and I’m sure you’ll find some black diamonds bringing new bold styles to men’s fashion.

18) Turquoise

This gemstone has been around forever and ever because of it’s blues and blacks and rich green tones. These polished stones resemble the great vivid color of a tropical ocean. Abundant and rather inexpensive, you’ll often find turquoise in all styles of sterling silver, or white metals.

But wait, there’s more…

Besides the 18 gemstones listed, there are also a couple other items that are common and very popular in men’s rings:

Enamel

Enameled jewelry is always a great look. You’ll often find black enamel found in rings such as: class rings, college rings, masonic rings and sports rings. The enameling is painted into the deep carvings of the ring to bring out the edges and make the etching pop. The contrast that the black brings to the ring, makes any engraving, lettering, or design stand out and be noticed. You can also find men’s wedding bands with black enameling in them as well. Long sharp black lines make a bold statement. The only downside to enameling is that eventually this enamel will fade away. Not to worry, it only takes minutes for any jeweler to re-enamel the item to make the light black turn a lovely dark black again.

And Finally, the last common item found in men’s rings:

Coins

Can’t forget coins. Men just love to wear coin rings. Any coins; liberty coins, Chinese coins, medallion coins from pirate ships, you name it. Panda coins, buffalo coins, American eagle gold coins, they all look great. Coin jewelry is sharp and distinct and when you think about it, who doesn’t like to be drenched in money?

The best gemstones for guys to wear. Most men’s gemstones are common and inexpensive, which just makes them all the more awesome. Enjoy the colors, enjoy the gemstones, but most of all, enjoy the jewelry.

Cheers! :)
